REDD + is a voluntary initiative, implemented in 37 countries worldwide. It is promoted in Costa Rica due to the country experience in the Payment for Environmental Services program.
REDD + is an initiative to combat climate change, a reality that affects all countries. The GHG (green house gases) are issued by ALL countries.
The consultation process starts in 2014 and REDD´s National Strategy will be the document to be consulted.
Currently, the Safeguards Information System is under construction. Its function is to report on the process of compliance of the UNFCCC safeguards. The UN-REDD Programme has provided targeted support to Fonafifo to design the national information system on REDD + safeguards under the UNFCCC.
Currently, Costa Rica is developing its stage of preparation for REDD+. As part of this stage, it is expected that the first base document of the REDD + Strategy will be distributed by mid-2014.
The formal consultation of REDD + Costa Rica has not begun. To date there have been early dialogue activities and a culturally appropriate methodological approach with indigenous territories has been developed in order to be the basis of planning for the future consultation process strategy.

Right now we are in dialogue with ARADIQUES to jointly plan the involvement and participation of indigenous peoples from the 5 territories in the process of building the strategy.
